Economic activity depends on natural capital, and there is a strong link between economic activity and the degradation of natural ecosystems. The degradation of natural ecosystems and ecosystem flows caused by economic activities is an existential problem, as ecosystem services form natural capital. The depletion of natural capital creates natural risks that have a significant impact on the financing of economic activities. The loss of biodiversity, a key element of natural capital, is increasingly seen as a potential source of financial risk. The financial sector is exposed to significant risks associated with biodiversity loss, while at the same time being uniquely positioned to accelerate positive change. Financial institutions may face financial, market, reputational and legal risks when they invest in economic activities that have adverse impacts on biodiversity or are highly dependent on natural capital. Accordingly, lending to sectors of the economy involves a certain degree of financial risk related to nature. There is a growing consensus in the financial sector that the loss of biodiversity and the degradation of ecosystem services flows is a serious systemic risk that needs to be addressed. In order to assess and mitigate the potential impact of the degradation of natural ecosystems on financial stability, the author describes the mechanisms of the impact of natural risks on the financial system and forms recommendations for assessing natural risks.
