At present, there is an increase in the number and scale of science volunteer projects in the Russian Federation. The implementation of science volunteer projects has many advantages for scientists, politicians and representatives of civil society. The advantages of science volunteer projects include: the ability to conduct research on a larger scale, increase the scientific literacy of the population and expand opportunities for the public to participate in socially significant scientific projects. Scientific volunteering projects are significantly dependent on the scientific volunteers involved in their implementation. Understanding what motives influence people's participation in science volunteer projects and why science volunteers continue to participate in science volunteer projects is critical to building and maintaining a strong base of participants in science volunteer projects. The purpose of this article is to provide a literature review of key theories describing volunteer motivation, and to form on their basis a toolkit for determining the motives of scientific volunteers that encourage them to take part in a science volunteering project. The first part of the article provides a brief overview of existing theoretical models describing volunteer motivation. The second part of the article presents the "Volunteer Functions Inventory" adapted for the purposes of scientific volunteering projects.
